Greenville Released Booking Photo Records
A mugshot is a photograph made during booking or correctional intake. It identifies the person associated with that event, but it does not prove guilt or show how a charge ended. Most people in the Greenville jail roster are pretrial. A charge can later be dismissed, end in acquittal, or qualify for expungement. The photo should therefore be read with the booking number, charge, court disposition, and actual release or transfer record.
South Carolina public-record law permits access to nonexempt public records, but it does not make every photograph available online forever. Privacy exemptions, redaction, retention rules, and the special treatment of expunged material can apply. No ordinary GCDC mugshot-retention period was verified. If a record is withheld, request the cited exemption and any segregable part that can be released.
- Booking photo
- An identification image created during admission to a jail or correctional system.
- Disposition
- The court result for a charge, such as conviction, dismissal, or acquittal.
- Expungement
- A legal process that removes qualifying arrest and court material from ordinary public access under specific rules.
Greenville Mugshot Access Channels
The source must match the custody system. GCDC, SCDC, the SLED registry, and local news do not maintain one shared photo archive. SC VINE is mainly a custody and notification service, not a historical booking-photo repository. A third-party image can be copied, stale, or attached to the wrong disposition, so it should not replace an official record.
| Channel | Photo status | Correct use |
|---|---|---|
| GCDC current inmate tool | Photo display was not reliably verified | Current-custody lead only, not a released archive |
| County FOIA request | Request the booking photo as a separate item | Official county record path, subject to law and retention |
| SCDC current detail | Most recent frontal mugshot and Picture Date | Current state inmate only |
| SCDC released search | No photo field | Actual state Release Date and Release Type |
| SLED registry | May show multiple photos for a covered registrant | Registry record, not a general release archive |
| News or third party | May reproduce an agency image | Secondary lead requiring disposition and identity checks |
Greenville County did not identify an official jail-information or mugshot mobile app. SC VINELink has mobile access, but it is not a county released-photo feed. Do not substitute an unofficial app or commercial mugshot publisher for the official record channel.
No Greenville Released Mugshot Archive
No county page reviewed establishes a Greenville released-mugshot archive, photo-publication window, or fixed roster-retention period. The county calls its tool “Incarcerated Inmates,” and its disclaimer warns that information changes quickly. Bot protection also prevented reliable verification of the live result fields. Even if a photo appears for a current detainee, one observed result would not prove that the image persists after release.
The official inmate-search disclaimer shows the county's current-only framing.
This label is why roster absence cannot be converted into a photo-retention claim or proof of release. Call GCDC and request the release and photo records instead.
Key limit: no verified current photo field, released-photo archive, publication window, or detention mobile app was found for GCDC.
Request Greenville Booking Photos
Greenville County accepts public-record requests by letter or its form, either through the relevant department or the County Attorney's Office. A request must reasonably describe the records. Direct a detention request to GCDC or the appropriate county custodian. Ask for electronic copies and a cost estimate before work begins. The Greenville County FOIA page, request form, and fee schedule provide the official route.
- Identify the person by full name, date of birth, booking number if known, and approximate booking date.
- Request the booking or admission record and the booking photograph as separate items.
- Also request actual release or transfer date and time, release authority or type, disposition, receiving agency, and holds shown at release.
- Ask for electronic delivery, a fee estimate, and notice before costs exceed a chosen amount.
- If no image is available, ask for the applicable retention or disposition authority. If withheld, ask for the statute or exemption used.
For records less than 24 months old, the county's explanation of §30-4-30(C) gives ten business days for an acknowledgment or determination. Older records receive twenty business days. After access is granted, production is due within 30 calendar days, or 35 days for older records. A required deposit can start the production clock, and may not exceed 25 percent of anticipated cost. These periods are not a fast release-confirmation method.

Greenville State Inmate Photographs
SCDC's current-inmate detail includes the most recent frontal mugshot and a Picture Date. Yet the current search excludes released people. The separate SCDC Released Inmate Search records actual Release Date and Release Type but has no photograph field. Those two tools must not be merged in copy or treated as one archive.
For a person already released from Perry Correctional Institution or another SCDC facility, request a releasable commitment or intake photograph through SCDC legal and FOIA information. Identify the SCDC number, full name, date range, release or discharge fields, and the photograph sought. SCDC's records contact is FOIA@doc.sc.gov, and Inmate Records answers sentence and release questions at 803-896-8531.
A state photo does not document a GCDC booking. Likewise, a county booking photo does not prove that the person later entered SCDC. Match the photograph to the agency, booking or commitment event, and record number.
Greenville Registry and News Photos
The Greenville SLED sex-offender registry portal may display multiple photos for a person who is legally required to register. It is a registry record, not a general mugshot archive. Presence does not establish the current release date, and absence says nothing about a person who is not subject to registry law. Registry data may change quickly or await verification.
A reputable local news report or agency press release may contain an official image, but its publication date does not establish the court disposition or later release. Compare it with the court case and custodian record. Commercial arrest and mugshot aggregators are weaker. Their entries can be copied, mislabeled, stale, or separated from a dismissal, acquittal, or expungement. They are not authoritative lookup routes and are not linked here.
When identity matters, compare full name, date of birth, agency, event date, and booking or SCDC number. Similar names and old images can otherwise create a false match.
Greenville Expungement Photo Limits
The Greenville Solicitor accepts qualifying expungement applications in person or by mail and requires a final disposition. Dismissed or not-guilty summary-court matters must go to the correct magistrate or municipal court. Its legacy expungement page reports a typical 10 to 16 week process and usual fees of $250 to the Solicitor, $25 to SLED, and $35 to the Clerk, subject to exceptions. Recheck that page before relying on its current amounts or timing.
Under South Carolina Code §17-1-40(B)(1), arrest and booking records, warrants, mugshots, and fingerprints tied to certain expunged matters are generally destroyed, with sealed-retention exceptions. Law-enforcement and prosecution agencies retain specified material under seal for three years and 120 days, with possible longer retention for listed proceedings. A detention or correctional facility may retain booking and identifying records under seal for no more than that period from the expungement order for facility-management purposes. Sealed material is not public without a court order.
Expungement does not automatically erase material independently published by news media or another third party. The Greenville Solicitor makes that limit explicit. A separate publication statute may apply, but it should not be confused with the court and agency expungement process.
South Carolina Mugshot Removal Law
South Carolina Code §17-1-60 targets pay-to-remove publication practices. It is unlawful to obtain arrest or booking records while knowing they will be published and removal or revision will require payment. It is also unlawful to demand payment or other value to remove, revise, or refrain from posting those records. For a qualifying written request, a covered publisher must remove the item without charge within 30 days when the original charge was discharged, dismissed, expunged, or ended in acquittal.
The request must be sent by certified mail with return receipt. It must identify the person, arrest date, and arresting agency, include certified disposition documents, and state the exact publication location, including the URL. If dismissal followed a plea to a different or lesser offense, the publisher may keep the entry but must revise it without charge within 30 days. The law contains media and publication exceptions, and the publisher-removal subsection excludes state and local government agencies.
This statute is not a universal right to erase an accurate photograph tied to a conviction. It also does not set GCDC's normal record-retention schedule. Apply the expungement rule, agency access rule, and publisher-removal rule separately.
Record-use limit. A booking photo may be incomplete or misleading without disposition data. Verify it with the originating agency and court.
Confirm Greenville Release With Photos
A photo answers “is this the image linked to this booking?” It does not answer “did this person leave custody?” For GCDC, check the current roster only as a present-custody lead, then call 864-467-2309 and ask whether physical release completed, whether a transfer occurred, and whether another agency hold applied. Obtain the release or transfer record when exact proof is needed.
For SCDC, use the current detail for a projection and current photograph, but use the dedicated released search for the completed state event. A release type of probation or community supervision should be followed through Post-Release Supervision. A detainer requires a destination check. The 24-Hour Releases page explains Greenville's lack of a county recent-release feed.
Keep the photo, booking identifiers, disposition, and release fields together. That record chain supports personal knowledge, release verification, notification, and court or legal processes without turning an arrest image into a claim about guilt or present status.
